Lens-Artists # 401: Focus on the Subject

Patti hosts this weeks challenge and asks us to use compositional tips to improve our images. The tips and full challenge details are outlined in her original challenge post which you can find here.

We’ve just returned from a holiday where my camera has been really busy. Having returned on Friday I shot a wedding yesterday so there’s no way I’ll get out this week to shoot new images for the challenge. What I can do is use some of the images from yesterday, and last week, to fit some of the tips in Patti’s post.

Home – A New Deck

The old deck. The original decking is on the left of this pic with more decking added a few years later. You can see the line down the centre where the old met the new, I hated that. The decking planks had long since lost their rustic look and I stained them grey to make them look a bit more presentable. Everywhere you see a plant pot in this image I found rot on the top planks and sub frame joists!

Travel – Marrakesh 2025

Carl Zeiss Flektogon 35mm F2.4

We took advantage of some really good, late booking, holiday package prices to take another trip out to Marrakesh last week. For us, November is a great time to visit Morocco. The temperature is a really nice 21C during the day. We needed a jacket in the early morning and evenings but we had clear blue skies most days with a bit of cloud bubbling up in the late afternoon. The cooler weather means less visitors so, although the main tourist attractions could be busy, generally everywhere was a bit quieter than in the warmer months.

Travel – High Atlas Mountains, Morocco 2025

Our first stop was a viewpoint overlooking a picturesque valley. Spookily situated next to a gift and tagine shop! I thought the terrain had a ‘Star Wars look about it. Not surprising really as lots of Stars Wars filming took place not far from here.

We’ve just returned from a weeks break in Marrakesh. We’re regular visitors here and every time we go I wonder where my images might come from. I needn’t have worried, I came back with far too many pics for one post.

Photography – Photoshop Actions

Following this weeks Lens-Artist Challenge on WP I was scrolling through some of the challenge posts. One of these was from /ˈsnæp.ʃɒt/. On Keith’s blog (it’s well worth spending some time there) I found a reference to taking pictures with a Game Boy console using a Game Boy Camera.

The Easter Lily Cactus

Echinopsis Subdenudata, commonly known as the Easter Lily or Domino Cactus.

We’ve had a tiny round cactus plant at home for about five years or so now. I think it probably came home with us as one of a pack of tiny cacti from Ikea. I’ve never really bothered with it and it normally sits, out of the way, on a book shelf, at the back of the kitchen. It’s in a really good warm, light position.

Travel – Richmond Park, London

A view across to central London from Richmond Park

We were invited to visit and stay with my in-laws who live in Bournemouth, Dorset over the Easter weekend so last Thursday we drove down from Bristol to join them on the south coast. We left the planning for the weekend to David and Donna, in fact the only thing we had to do was to provide a suitable dessert for our meal on that first night!

Walking – Stanton, Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, UK

The road into Stanton and our walk start point.

We picked off another walk from our OS Pathfinder Book this week, taking on a 9.5 mile circular route, starting in the ‘Chocolate Box’ village of Stanton. I was expecting Stanton to be busy with Cotswolds Tik-Tok tourists but that wasn’t the case. Another surprise was a well kept, empty, free car park in the village, provided by the local Parish Council. That’s a much appreciated rarity these days.
