Egidio hosts this weeks challenge and, if I have this right, he would like us to post black and white images that contain a subject, that we know so well, we can replace the missing colour. His original challenge post is here.
I process very little in B&W. So, I’ve gone through my archives looking for colour images that, once converted, contain a subject that hopefully everyone can instantly put the colour back in with their minds eye.

One thing this excercise does bring home is how important colour is to company branding. I constantly see adverts on TV and before anything is mentioned, I sometimes know the brand. These things get right into your subconscious. I tried to find an image as an example, that would be widely recognised around the world. I came up with this next image. I bet most people would know the usual text lettering colours.

Here’s a few more examples for the challenge….

Thank you to Egidio for hosting this weeks challenge. I hope changing things to fit the brief is ok. I had nothing otherwise.

Steve, wonderful images! I guessed them all! The flamingo is my favorite.
Thank you Beth ๐
Nice take on this challenge Steve! Loved the flamingo.
Thank you Anne ๐

Steve, what a terrific gallery! You picked some amazing themes to show color in black and white. The flamingo is outstanding, and so are the other images, including those boxes that are part of our daily lives. We “see” the colors in monochrome. I gotta say that the bridge was another great example. The rust and peeling paint are the details we need to see.
Thank you Egidio. This was an interesting challenge. I’ve never seen a photo challenge based on this premiss before. Great choice ๐
Great photos Steve, I really like the sunflower!
Thank you Pamela ๐
These are great Steve, all very recognisable in colour, and in black and white.
Thank you Leanne ๐
What a wonderful set of images, Steve. You really encapsulated the theme this week. Congratulations. (Of all of them, I liked the Union flag box the most.)
Thank you Keith ๐
Love the fierce flamingo.
Thank you Marie. They’re impressive birds ๐
Echoing Marie, your first image is beautiful. On the advertising front, another trademark is that Amazon smile, instantly recognizable in color or black-and-white.
Thank you John. I didn’t even think of that when I posted that Danbo but you’re absolutely right. Me and my wife were discussing this in the Hyde kitchen earlier today (riveting I know). We both agreed that one of the easiest to recognise would be the McDonalds logo and associated colours. The run one add over here with no text, just their corporate brand colours.
We did have a similar take on the challenge, Steve. I love your flamingo!
Thank you Sofia. Great minds…. ๐
Well done as always Steve, loved them all. Of course the Flamingo but a sad take on our universal consciousness of advertising colors!!
Thank you Tina ๐
Great photos. Can’t wait to read the Annie Lennox memoir.
Tnak you Rebecca. It’s a great book. Lots of her own images, with anectdotes, from the start of her career up until present ๐
Great shots, Steve. B&W lends such texture to photographs. And I see the Washington Monument in there – my hometown! Cheers!
Thank you Kirsten. Every time I work on those Washington pics I want to go back ๐
The sunflower is interesting that I see colours in my brain. Good one.
Thank you ๐
