Ann-Christine has set this weeks Lens-Artist Challenge and has asked us to post images related to markets. Her original challenge post can be found here.

I love markets. Busy, colourful, plenty of people and lots to photograph. It’s a real happy place for me with my camera. I always check out if there are local markets wherever we visit. Most of the time that pays off but, on more than a few occasions, we’ve made a trip out to what was advertised as a fruit market to find a few apples for sale in someone’s front garden! Hey-ho, I’ll photograph them anyway.
I could easily have filled this whole post with images from the souks in Marrakech, Morocco. Its markets, or souks, are on another level to anywhere else I’ve been. Manic, mad, colourful, busy but brilliant. We wander into the souks every day we’re there. We’ve been back three times and I still get lost in them and find a new area I didn’t know was there.

Another fantastic market we discovered was in Rhodes City, Rhodes, Greece. It’s a farmers market, known locally as the Laiki. It’s predominantly stall holders selling fresh fruit and vegetables, although there’s a fresh fish section. Like everywhere in Rhodes no one minded me taking pictures at all. In fact some quite like to pose up for you!

I’m happy in any market. The best are in the residential areas where the locals go to shop. We found one of those whilst staying in Torrox, Andalucía, Spain. The area is a little bit of the usual tourist trail and the market there was large and caters for the locals, rather than tourists.

I hope one day we can visit some of the Asian markets I see on the TV from time to time. They look amazing and are definitely on my photography bucket list. I’ll finish with a few more Morocco images and take the opportunity to thank Ann-Christine for hosting this weeks challenge.

Love the texture especially on the last set.
Steve, the gallery is beautiful. I especially like that night shot. Wow!
Thank you Egidio 🙂
Lovely photos – so colourful! And the happy welcoming face in the last photo.
Thank you Amanda 🙂
These are so lively and colorful, I feel I could have been there. The fruits on the trailer, maybe my favorite one. Great post Steve
Thak you Ritva 🙂
Loved Morocco and would be happy to visit again! Thank you for a beautiful set of photos on the theme, Steve. Now I feel we have to take one more trip there – we only had a week, and so much to see. Love your last set especially, the light and the setting with those colours is perfect.
Thank you Ann-Christine. We’ve been three times now and I’ve still found plenty to photograph 🙂
;.D
These are great pictures, Steve, I can tell your enjoy visiting markets. I especially like your last three, great colors and a very happy man with all of his sweets!!
Thank you Sylvia. We made him happier on our next visit. I took him out an A3 print of the image. he loved it and we got free sweets 🙂
I had Morocco on the list of places to go, your photos convinced me even more 🙂
Definitely go Sofia. I was really apprehensive before our first trip to Marrakech. Once there though it was fantastic (you have to embrace the madness). We went back the following year and then again last December. We got a cheap deal with TUI and paid just over £1000 all inclusive. Its a fabulous hotel as well and the food is amazing
Sounds amazing, Steve! I just have the problem of school holidays 🙂
Great shots, Steve! My favorite is the spices in the . . . are they rug bags??
Thank you Kirsten. Yes rug bags I photographed them every time we passed that spice shop 🙂
They are gorgeous, especially all grouped together. I would have been photographing that non-stop, too!
Steve, great shots, especially from Morocco. My favorite is that colorful fruit cart.
Thank you John 🙂
I agree, those Moroccan markets look fun to wander about, shopping, eating, and taking photos.
That paella was my fave. By the look on the chefs face, he is a true artist.
That guy had people taking pics the whole time we were there. He was very good natured about it. The queue for that food stall was unbelievable. I don’t like seafood but those that do were heading there 🙂
It’s good that you received permission to capture the subject before you took the picture. 😊
Yes I always ask and very rarely get a refusal 🙂
Beautiful colours and atmosphere from around the Mediterranean. The one from London does not look out of place in this company either.
Thank you 🙂
Great street photography!
Thank you 🙂
Beautiful colour’s!
Thank you Pamela 🙂
