Lens-Artists Challenge #360 – Found at the Fair/ Market

Ann-Christine has set this weeks Lens-Artist Challenge and has asked us to post images related to markets. Her original challenge post can be found here.

Borough Market, London. A great place to visit anyway but fantastic with a camera. Very very busy though. I asked this guy if I could shoot this and he was fine with that. In fact I found all the stall holders more than happy for me to photograph their stands

I love markets. Busy, colourful, plenty of people and lots to photograph. It’s a real happy place for me with my camera. I always check out if there are local markets wherever we visit. Most of the time that pays off but, on more than a few occasions, we’ve made a trip out to what was advertised as a fruit market to find a few apples for sale in someone’s front garden! Hey-ho, I’ll photograph them anyway.

I could easily have filled this whole post with images from the souks in Marrakech, Morocco. Its markets, or souks, are on another level to anywhere else I’ve been. Manic, mad, colourful, busy but brilliant. We wander into the souks every day we’re there. We’ve been back three times and I still get lost in them and find a new area I didn’t know was there.

The square in front of the central souk area in Marrakech changes to food stalls at night. It’s popular with locals with dancing groups and music adding to the vibe. It’s also full of trinket sellers with their goods spread out on blankets or on push carts.

Another fantastic market we discovered was in Rhodes City, Rhodes, Greece. It’s a farmers market, known locally as the Laiki. It’s predominantly stall holders selling fresh fruit and vegetables, although there’s a fresh fish section. Like everywhere in Rhodes no one minded me taking pictures at all. In fact some quite like to pose up for you!

I’m happy in any market. The best are in the residential areas where the locals go to shop. We found one of those whilst staying in Torrox, Andalucía, Spain. The area is a little bit of the usual tourist trail and the market there was large and caters for the locals, rather than tourists.

Torrox market. My brother in law wanted to buy a Sharks Tooth necklace because his wife hates them! He bought one as well, from this stall. He’s still wearing it to irritate his wife.

I hope one day we can visit some of the Asian markets I see on the TV from time to time. They look amazing and are definitely on my photography bucket list. I’ll finish with a few more Morocco images and take the opportunity to thank Ann-Christine for hosting this weeks challenge.

  1. Loved Morocco and would be happy to visit again! Thank you for a beautiful set of photos on the theme, Steve. Now I feel we have to take one more trip there – we only had a week, and so much to see. Love your last set especially, the light and the setting with those colours is perfect.

    • Definitely go Sofia. I was really apprehensive before our first trip to Marrakech. Once there though it was fantastic (you have to embrace the madness). We went back the following year and then again last December. We got a cheap deal with TUI and paid just over £1000 all inclusive. Its a fabulous hotel as well and the food is amazing

    • That guy had people taking pics the whole time we were there. He was very good natured about it. The queue for that food stall was unbelievable. I don’t like seafood but those that do were heading there 🙂
