This image is similar to the scene in the film ‘Gladiator’ where Russell Crowe returns to his small holding. It’s not Russell Crowe in this image, it’s my wife, Linda, and there’s no bad news at the end of this track. However both and Russell were doing the same thing, reaching out to feel the texture of the wheat.
Anne has set this weeks Lens Artist Challenge. Anne has asked us to show images where texture plays an integral part. Here original challenge post can be found here: Lens Artist Challenge #397: Texture
The term texture is pretty self expanatory but I did Google the meaning of the word. Google AI responded with this:
Texture refers to the physical feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or substance, such as rough, smooth, soft, or hard. It describes the structural quality of materials (like fabric or wood) or the way food feels in the mouth, and can also refer to visual patterns in art or the blending of sounds in music.
I decided to approach this by featuring some everyday things where texture plays an important part and also cover the bases in the Google definition. I’ve tried to use images you can look at and know exactly what that texture would taste or feel like. So here goes:
Texture in food plays such an important role in how we taste and enjoy a treat like this. On that spoon is the rough texture of the biscuit crumb up against the smooth texture of the cream cheese the gooey, blackcurrant topping. An Exmoor pony. You just know that shaggy fur and mane is going to be rough and coarse.Red Rambutan fruit. Prickly but soft at the same time.Smooth wet clay, the texture of which is going to change as it dries. This handsome scarecrow is full of different fabric textures. One thing at home we always refer to the texture of is our towels. I wish I could say we were the creatives here, but it wasn’t us. The cabin crew on a cruise created this elephant. We came back to our cabin to find a different towel animal every day.Texture in music. That’s hard to show in an image but this song that was considered to be the song that introduced rap into the mainstream. It marries the musical textures of rap with a funk rhythm. This is the 12″ single I bought back in the late 1970’s.Finally another home shot. In future Lens-Artists posts I’m going to try and include at least one shot taken specifically for that weeks challenge. So today I took this image of the bed in our spare bedroom because it’s more interesting than our towels and is full of varied cosy warm textures. Soon to be changed for summer bedding.
That’s it from me. Thank you to Anne for hosting this weeks challenge.
Wonderful examples in your response, Steve! That pony is my favorite, you nailed that eye focus, and the beautiful focus fall-off accompanied by the darkening exposure makes the image all the more striking.
Great collection! I love the texture of farm fields!
Wonderful collection of textures! I love the first one of your wife feeling the texture of the wheat.
Wow Steve, what a great response to this challenge. You showed the textures in everyday things. And cheese cake before I eat breakfast!

A beautiful gallery of textures Steve, I especially love the way you captured the wet clay 😊
