Lens Artist Challenge #354: Reflections

Anne has set this weeks challenge and asks us to post images with reflections. Here’s a link to Annes original post. I’m a little short on reflection images other than bridal preparation shots (I have lots of those). I have been able to find a few though so here they are.

Carew Castle, Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK. The estuary, in front of the castle, does fill with water at high tide. I’m hoping I can go back one day and get the castle reflection in its full glory.
Château Pichon Longueville Baron, Bordeaux, France. We drove past this winery whilst we were staying near Bordeaux. We drove in to look around and whilst we were there, booked up for a free tour and wine tasting a few days later. I think they produce quite a posh, expensive wine here, which was totally wasted on me, but the tour of the winery and buildings was really good.
A huge game of chess on the esplanade in Estepona, Spain. I quite often use Lins sunglasses for making a standard shot a little bit different.
A typical wedding prep image. I didn’t realise, until I started shooting this type of shot, that a mirror behaves exactly the same as anywhere else in relation to depth of field. So shooting close into a mirror like this, with the lens wide open, is great for blurring out the background behind the subjects image in the mirror. However, you have to be mindful of the focus area for your subject as well. I don’t know why I didn’t know that or expect it to be any different. My guess would be that because a mirror is flat I expected everything to be in focus across its flat surface, but that’s not so.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, USA. I have another image from here with the Washington Monument reflected in the wall. That worked really well. Unfortunately that image is stored on a DVD that developed a read error the last time I tried to load it. I don’t even have a DVD drive these days. I’m a bit more savvy with my image storage these days.

Thank you to Anne for hosting another great Lens-Artist Challenge.

  1. Terrific images as always Steve, I especially loved the monument image at the end. I feel your pain on the DVD, I have some older hard drives (REALLY older!!) that no longer work and I cannot retrieve their data which really ticks me off. So now of course I have 2 backups (local and remote) for every drive. Overkill!!!

    • Thank you Tina. Re the backups, I now have the same as you. I had to get serious with it once I started shooting weddings. That said, these days, portable storage is much more affordable than it used to be.
