Gromit Unleashed 3 – Part 2

The Mr Darcy Sculpture at the Clifton Observatory. Mr Darcy was painted by Rhiannon Southwell and was inspired by Jane Austins ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

We went back in to Bristol yesterday to meet up with my daughter, Zoe, and three of our grandchildren, Ewan, Barney and Toby, with the intention of visiting a few more Gromit Unleashed 3 Sculptures. We decided to go in to the Clifton area of the city and pick off the five figurines located there.

Ewan and Barney using the Trail Unleashed App to record their finds. It still amazes me how easily a three and four year old can navigate their way around a phone. They didn’t need any help from me!

There were five sculptures on the Clifton mini trail for us to spot but they’re quite spread out around the area. We used on street parking at Clifton Down (that was a nasty £10 surprise for four hours) and then walked back over to the Clifton Observatory to find our first Sculpture.

With Mr Darcy ticked off and recorded in the Gromit Trail App our next sculpture was located quite close by, on the far side of the Clifton Suspension Bridge. We made the short walk across the bridge and found our next figurine, The Bristol Barker.

Our next target was in Victoria Square, Clifton, which was a good twenty minute walk from the bridge. Quite a trek for little legs but the boys were excited to find their next Gromit and the walk there, through the grand houses and shopping area in Clifton is really nice.

From here we had a shorter walk to our next Gromit which was situated outside the Victoria Rooms on Whiteladies Road. We made our way straight there and got our first sight of what was my favourite sculpture so far, Bobby Dazzler.

This figurine was really impressive and popular. The location, closer to the city centre, was by far the busiest site we visited with a small queue of people waiting to record and have their photo taken with the sculpture.

We had one last Gromit to find on the Clifton mini trail. It was towards the top of Whiteladies Road, another good 15 minute walk for us. We soon got there though and and checked off our last sculpture, The Great Gatsby which was painted in an art deco design.

Our last visit to follow the trail was in July, prior to the start of the school holidays. That’s blogged here. It was noticeable straight away that the trail was a lot busier now the kids were on their summer break. There was a small queue at most of the Gromit sites we visited and we saw a lot of the same people at every location. That was nice though and added to the overall trail experience. We finished our half day with a picnic and ice cream back at the suspension bridge play area.

The perfect end to our day Gromit Spotting. A ’99’ ice cream cone. That ice cream gets everywhere.
