Lens-Artists #346 – Cinematic

A man walking across a road junction in Marrakech, Morocco. We were having a coffee in a Sky Bar which was great for views down in to the street below. I think the unusual viewpoint gives it a cinematic feel. I search out Sky Bars wherever we go now.

This week’s Lens Artists Challenge is presented by Sofia, and it’s Cinematic. I’m a bit rushed posting this as we’re travelling to Lanzarote later today but, having missed last weeks challenge, I didn’t want another to pass me by.

I’ve had a quick look through my images and came up with these as a few examples of my interpretation of this weeks theme. I think they fit the bill. The final image is a bit of a cheat as it was actually taken on a filmset in Bristol, UK, back in the 1980’s. I was shooting on slide film then (before family life, work and a mortgage took precedence over my expensive hobby).

It’s from the set of a TV Drama called Codename Kyril. I was a young policeman back then and I’d been hired as such, by the producers of the show, on a private basis to assist with the filming on streets around the city. They kindly allowed me back on set the next day (my day off) as I knew this car explosion scene was being set up and I wanted to photograph it. The image here is a digital conversion of that slide.

I really like this shot. It just worked out well with the street lamps and a taxi coming towards me at the right time. It feels a bit film like to me.
This is quite graphic but it’s just a university student who’d gone above and beyond with his outfit for the Bristol Zombie Walk one Halloween. He’s in a Haz Mat suit touched up with paint and make up. I could have filled this post with images akin to ‘The Last of Us’ from that day.
There’s something a bit road trip about this. It was taken in Cannes France. Just behind me, and this couple, some of the most luxurious super yachts in the world were moored up with people eating in some of the most expensive restaurants and hotels. A Big Mac for me every time or should that be ‘A Royale with Cheese’
The Codename Kyril shot. They bought these cars a few days before just to blow them up. When the XR3 had been delivered it was taken straight off to have a re-spray, just for this scene.

Thank you to Sofia for hosting the challenge. If you want to know more about the Lens-Artists Challenge, please click here.

  1. It doesn’t feel rushed at all, Steve and thank you so much for sharing these photos with us. They are all awesome and the one that stays with me is the Volkswagen, the light is just perfect.
