The Bay of Abandoned Hotels
This week our Lens Artists Challenge host is Anne. The theme is Abandoned
The Bay of Abandoned Hotels is located at Župa Bay. Kupari, Croatia, about twenty minutes along the coast from Dubrovnik. Kupari’s Župa Bay is an old resort of five large hotels that were constructed for the former Yugoslav Peoples Army in the early 1960’s. The hotels were attacked and badly damaged during the Yugoslav Wars in the early 1990’s and then abandoned.
We visited the resort during a holiday in Dubrovnik in 2019. The five hotels are still in situ but derelict and, these days, they’re mainly used for paint ball fights by the locals. When we were there you were able to wander around all the hotels, although they are total wrecks. There’s lot’s more information on Kupari here.

Yikes Steve, I’d be worried the building would fall down on me while wandering through it! A perfect subject for the week. Interestingly we visited Dubrovnik and nearby Croatia but never knew this existed! Loved your take on the subject this week.

What a great choice for this challenge Steve. I like that you chose more contemporary buildings. It’s sad that they couldn’t be repurposed for something.

It is interesting to hear of the history of these once beautiful buildings. Like Anne, I find it sad that it has not been feasible to return them to service.
You would think that with Dubrovnik so close it would be feasible. Its a lovely beach and sea as well.
That’s such a fascinating story, Steve. The pictures are also great; they really capture the spirit of what the hotels must once have been.
