Travel – North Yorkshire, UK – Cleveland Way Coast Path and Bridlington

The local Fire Brigade were on an exercise in North Bay as we walked through. Here they are making rainbows.

We decided on another hike for Wednesday but thought we would stay local and walk the Cleveland Way coast path we’d first walked on Sunday. We’d missed out on the coastline views because of the sea mist and fog on the first walk. In total contrast, Wednesday was a lovely warm, sunny day.

We followed pretty much the exact same route, walking north along the coast path for about four miles before cutting inland to pick up the Cinder Track for the walk back to the Air BnB in Scalby. The walk was well worth doing again and totally different in fine weather.

An inland view with wheat ready for harvesting.
I spotted this in a hedgerow on the walk. Its called Robin’s Pin Cushion or rose bedeguar gall. It’s caused by gall wasp larvae developing in an infected rose bud.

Bridlington

Thursday was visiting time again. We’d thought about driving to York but the logistics just didn’t make it worthwhile unless we set off really early. We decided to leave York for now and perhaps make that a weekend trip of it’s own. Instead we drove south to the seaside resort/fishing port of Bridlington on the East Yorkshire coast.

Salmon head lobster bait. A good stock image for me.

I didn’t really know that much about Bridlington but we were pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed our morning there. It has a nice town centre, with the usual shops and cafes. There’s a nice sea front promenade to walk with really nice beaches on either side of the town.

The best part for me was the harbour which was full of small fishing and leisure boats. Bridlington has a busy port primarily for crab and lobster fishing. We were able to wander freely around the harbour, watching the fishermen preparing frozen bait (fish offal – mackrel and salmon heads) for the lobster and crab pots. It was interesting to watch and provided a few stock image opportunities for me.

We left Bridlington just after lunchtime and stopped at Filey on the way back. Filey was smaller and quieter than Bridlington. It does have a quaint town centre and lovely beaches. It’s a nice place to spend an hour or two just wandering through the town and onto the seafront. Again well worth a visit and a nice way to finish our mini road trip along the East Yorkshire coast.

That was pretty much it for our North Yorkshire holiday. We used Friday to walk into Scarborough again and spend more time exploring the town centre, before walking back via North Bay. I really liked this part of the world. Fantastic scenery, lovely seaside towns and really warm, friendly people. We’ll definitely be coming back to explore a little bit more.

Me, feeling like a Hobit 🙂
