Travel – Rhodes, Greece 2025

We like Rhodes, in fact we really like Rhodes. In recent years we’ve been returning annually to the same area in Ialyssos, about four miles from Rhodes Town. We like Ialyssos and it just fits in with everything we want from a short holiday.

I’ve written quite a lot about our previous visits here but we did have a couple of new experiences on this trip. The first was a 6.6 magnitude earthquake which struck the area at 2.30am on our second night. We were asleep but woke up to find our hotel apartment shaking violently, with us being shaken around in our beds. It was a frightening but surreal experience and once the movement had stopped we were at a bit of a loss as to what to do.

As it was there was nothing much we could do. Earthquakes are quite common in the area, although this quake was stronger than most. We spent some time just checking the internet for information but after about an hour we just had a cup of tea and then went back to sleep. There was no damage to our room or the hotel and by the next day it was as if nothing had happened.

Another new venture was walking from our hotel to Rhodes airport to watch the planes coming in to land. Our hotel was situated about three miles from the airport so I did some research on Google Earth and it looked like we could make our way along the beach front to the airport perimeter. As things turned out it was a really nice walk along the beach and really productive for a few stock photo images.

We managed to get through to the back of the airport with no problems with the planes coming in low over the perimeter fencing to land. An airport security vehicle pulled up whilst we were there but the guard just stared at me, decided I wasn’t a threat, and drove off.

An average size cruise ship moored in the cruise terminal at Rhodes City.

We spent the rest of our week mooching around the local area and took a couple of walks in to Rhodes City, visiting a few of our favourite local bakeries and wandering around the Old Town and harbour. Plenty of cake tasting took place as you’ll see in the image gallery below.
